Maple

Another week and our seedlings are growing and the bulbs we have been observing  have been growing at a phenomenal rate. Each day children come in and go, "Wow ! The leaves are taller ! The petals have gone pink !" Photos to follow. Look out for a report on our trip occurring after the half-term break. Enjoy the next week.

Maple Class 2017

Welcome to the curriculum pages for Maple class with Mr Charman supported by Mrs Pike

You will find updates, images and articles as we begin our learning

RSPB are having their garden bird watch at the moment. With bare trees it is easier to spot birds so we built our own bird hide outside the classroom and have been using a tally chart to record the birds we see. It is the first time some of us have used a tally chart and it has proved a quick and easy way to record data. We will be using our tally charts to make pictograms and block graphs this week. We have seen a lot of Blackbirds. Or should that be black birds ??????

We have built houses out of different materials, including brick and mortar, this week. We are "housed -out" ! Children have taken over the strange brick building in our classroom as the occupant has not appeared.....but who knows wha could appear anytime soon ! We have made wanted posters so that others may look out for the Big Bad Wolf ?

We have looked at explanation texts and written our own explanations, with labelled diagrams,... regarding what a house actually is.

Next week the children will create their own versions of the 3 Little Pigs. Who knows what their creative minds will conjure-up ?

We have been telling the plight of the three pigs using puppets and acting out the tale with masks, writing our own version of the story but..........always looking over our shoulder in case the Big Bad Wolf returns !

Happy New Year to you all !  Strange things have been happening in Maple classroom. A brick building without doors or windows has prompted many furrowed brows and good questions. Who does it belong to ?

We have our suspicions; having read the Three Little Pigs is it a new house for the pigs ? Does it belong to the Big Bad Wolf ? It has a chimney and we all know who goes down chimneys hunting little piggies ! Watch this space !

A quiet week this one with only the Nativity performance rehearsal, performance dress rehearsal, actual nativity performance to parents, Christmas faire and carols around the tree.......to do !!!! Spot of learning thrown-into the mix though there might be a Christmas theme to the maths and literacy !!

Pictures to follow but then hopefully you will be at the performance, faire and carols.

Happy Christmas.

Mr Charman

Christmas around the corner which means the Christmas performance rehearsals are in full swing, excitement is being ramped -up, shorter, cold days means slippery paths and no-one else is allowed to get a sniffle or tummy-bug until the Christmas performance is over ! Looking forward to seeing all the children in their costumes for the dress rehearsal on Monday.

Pet Shop

It is never too late to ring the pet shop and book an appointment as this receptionist shows here.

Begin the week with a visit by a giraffe called Harold. Honestly.

The week began with an exciting trip to a caravan like no other...the Life Education Bus. Maple learnt about what we need to do to keep healthy including a balanced diet, sleep and exercise; which incidentally helps us get ready to learn. Did I mention a giraffe ? He was with us in the caravan too.

Not many Reception children can say they built a viaduct !

Another week starts and we are another week closer to Christmas so the performance rehearsals have started along with the songs. Also this week we have had some problem solving: how can we get the water from here to here ? I called it a viaduct, they looked at me strangely ! When you do not know about gravity this is a tough one ! But these children solved it.

Children in Need happened and so some fine motor skills were required to make Pudsey spotty masks and headdresses.

Reading ! Reading ! Reading !

So many Reception children have begun sound-talking words and beginning to blend this week, meaning that for many reading has become an, "I can read" phenomena!

The whole class has had a focus on rhyme this week after reading "Oi Dog !" and "Oi Frog !" If you do not know these picture books then put them on a Father Christmas wish-list along with "Oi, Kitten !" Recommended for all the family.

We have been alight this week inspired by the bonfire and fireworks last weekend. There have been lots of fireworks made and recreated artistically. Did I say alight? The whole class were a bonfire in PE this week: first the wood, then the first flame, then the flames grew larger and spread until we were all alight !!!! Check out the photos !

Our first ever class trip out of school to Pizza Express and the children were brilliant. Your children know how to make (and eat) a margherrita pizza !

Wow! Everyone is in and up and running after the half-term break and in no-time it will be bonfires and fireworks followed by Poppy Day celebrations. Before that though is Maple Class', first ever class assembly. Children are excited to show how we learn our phonics, our reading, how we count and add. Of course, it will be their first time standing and speaking in-front of such a large audience and that is always a bit scary so remember to grin and give them a thumbs-up!
