Curriculum

We are really excited about our curriculum because we have just started learning through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). The IPC is one of the fastest growing curriculums in the world today. It is a philosophy, process and pedagogy which enables us to deliver a broader and more rigorous learning experience for your children.

Curriculum clear learning goalsThere are clear learning goals which are the foundation of the IPC. They define what children are expected to know, what they should be able to do as well as the understandings they will develop in their academic, personal and international learning. The learning goals are interwoven into the cross-curricular units. These units are based around exciting themes which keep the children motivated through the learning of the foundation subjects. It also allows them to make purposeful connections throughout their learning and to see how their subject learning is related to the world they live in. Within each theme there are lots of opportunities for collaborative learning, active learning, learning outside, for role play, and for children to learn from each other.

The IPC is in line with the National Curriculum 2014. Our 2 year rolling programme enables children to cover all areas of the curriculum in a fun and engaging way.

Okeford Fitzpaine is a Church of England primary school that offers a caring environment, based on the values of its Christian foundation, where, in a stimulating and purposeful atmosphere, every child can enjoy, achieve and develop a love of learning.

Moreover, we also promote the ‘fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs’ (DFE/British Government ‘Prevent Strategy’ 2011).

The school is organised into two classes so teaching takes place in mixed age groups. Where possible, we have a creative approach to learning making links between subjects as we believe that is how children learn best. A wide variety of resources and study programmes are adapted to meet the needs of our pupils. There is an emphasis on deepening learning so that children become proficient at using their knowledge and skills in a variety of ways and across different subjects. Our classes are small enough so that every child has plenty of teacher/TA/pupil interaction and support, whatever their innate ability.

English is taught discretely and through other subjects. We use Read, Write Inc as the main programme to teach phonics. Maths is also taught discretely with a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving using the White Rose Maths schemes.

If you have any questions or would like to find out more about our curriculum please speak to your child’s class teacher or Mrs Peters.
